WFS Launch of ‘Healthy Goals’

Healthy Goals 2026

Supporting people over 40 years of age = supporting the NHS

Sunday 4 October 2026

Auldhouse Playing Fields

180 Thornliebank Road, Glasgow, G46 7RQ

Along with our health partners, CHSS, SAMH, Scottish Prostate Cancer Initiative, Parkinson's UK, Age Scotland, Walking Scotland and Movement for Health, Walking Football Scotland is launching the inaugural Healthy Goals event to support older people's health and wellbeing and showcase the major contribution Walking Football has to relieve future pressures on the NHS.

 About the event

For Women and Men over 40 years of age

www.healthy-goals.org

The overall aim of our event is to focus on Health & Wellbeing, using Walking Football participation on the day as the fun aspect to raise funds for charity.

What is the event?

  • We aim to have 5 continuous Walking Football matches taking place from 9am to 9pm with players playing for an hour or so each across the day.

  • The matches are non-competitive with each match refereed by official SFA referees.

  • Players, men and women, must be over 40 years of age.

  • Individuals, groups of friends or families, business teams etc. can all be accommodated with smaller groups allocated into matches depending on age, ability and perceived fitness levels.

The main objectives of the event are.

  • to enable our health partners to discuss their services throughout the day and help identify specific resources that could contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of themselves or others they care for. In particular we would encourage pre-booking of both

  • To offer Health Checks by both Scottish Prostate Cancer Initiative and CHSS for both participants and others in the wider local community

  • to reduce the long-term burden on the NHS by enabling people to improve their own health and wellbeing.

  • to raise awareness of the health benefits of walking football, i.e. attract new people to come along, participate for an hour or so and hopefully be encouraged to attend walking football sessions at times and locations that suit them best.

  • to raise funds for our nominated charities on the day through fees to participate and donations in the lead up to and during the day.

Signing up for the event –

Non-Competitive Walking Football

  • Cost is £10 per person, with all monies raised from the football matches going to charity.

  • All matches will be refereed by SFA qualified refs

Strong Start for New WFS Player Development Workshops in Stranraer

Walking Football Scotland was delighted to deliver the first of our new WFS Player Development Workshops today, with a fantastic opening session hosted in Stranraer.

The day began with an enjoyable game of walking football at Stair Park, providing a great opportunity for players to get out on the pitch before moving into the classroom for the workshop session.

The response from everyone in attendance was extremely positive, with players fully engaging throughout. There was plenty of discussion, thoughtful questions and a genuine eagerness to learn more about the game, its laws and how we can all work together to continue raising standards across walking football in Scotland.

A huge thank you goes to Gary Small and everyone at Stranraer for their warm welcome and excellent hospitality throughout the day. We also want to recognise the outstanding contribution of our South West Regional Representative, Jim Paterson, who continues to do a tremendous amount of work on behalf of Walking Football Scotland, regularly visiting clubs and supporting the development of the game across the region.

Today’s workshop marks the beginning of an exciting new education programme for players, designed to develop understanding of the Laws of the Game, promote respect and fair play, encourage safe participation and help players become positive ambassadors for walking football.

Further WFS Player Development Workshop dates will be announced in due course as we continue our commitment to supporting players, strengthening clubs and improving the game across Scotland.

This latest round-up showcases the very best of the game—from major tournaments to memorial festivals that honour those who helped shape our walking football family.

As always, it’s the friendships, respect and community spirit behind these events that make walking football so special.

Walking Football Community Comes Together for Geordie Muir Memorial Festival ❤️⚽

More than 60 men and women came together on 5 July for the annual Geordie Muir Memorial Walking Football Festival, enjoying a fantastic day of football, friendship and remembering a much-loved member of the walking football community.

Players showcased not only their footballing ability and competitive spirit, but also the respect, sportsmanship and good humour that make walking football so special. The festival once again highlighted the strong sense of camaraderie that exists both on and off the pitch.

Special recognition also goes to Margaret Muir for her wonderful home baking, which was greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance and added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Congratulations to Arbroath FC Walking Football Club and everyone involved in organising another fitting tribute to Geordie Muir, creating a memorable day that celebrated football, friendship and community in equal measure. 👏❤️⚽

John Cunningham Memorial Festival Celebrates Friendship and Community ❤️⚽

The annual John Cunningham Memorial Festival once again brought the walking football community together for a memorable day of football, friendship and remembrance, celebrating the life of a much-loved teammate whose passion for the game continues to inspire so many. The festival honours John Cunningham, a devoted walking footballer remembered for his warm personality, love of the game and the friendships he built through football.

Players and referees from clubs across Scotland came together to enjoy the festival in the true spirit of walking football, with the emphasis firmly on participation, camaraderie and remembering John rather than results.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended, played and officiated, helping to make the day another outstanding success. Organisers, Raith Rovers, also confirmed that, at the request of John's wife, Fiona, all funds raised from this year's festival will be shared between Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and Epilepsy Scotland, supporting two charities close to the family's heart.

The John Cunningham Memorial Festival continues to be a wonderful tribute to a man who loved football and the friendships it created, while demonstrating once again the compassion, generosity and community spirit that make walking football so special. 👏❤️⚽

Reflecting on the day, participant Claire described it as "a really incredible experience," praising the welcoming atmosphere and the camaraderie shared by everyone involved.

Well done to the Rangers Charity Foundation team on representing Scottish walking football so brilliantly, both on and off the pitch. 👏💙⚽

The 2026 Walking Football Glasgow Cup continued over the past two weeks with the Men's Over 60s and Men's Over 70s competitions, attracting another outstanding turnout at Toryglen Regional Football Centre.

In the Over 60s event, Pollok United produced a series of strong performances to lift the trophy, while in the Over 70s category, Fife Wanderers overcame Alloa Athletic to be crowned champions.

Whether representing Scotland overseas, supporting local charities, celebrating club milestones or introducing new people to walking football, our clubs continue to demonstrate that the game is about far more than the final score.

HBDreampot Enjoy Inaugural Walking Football Session 💙⚽

There was a fantastic atmosphere as HBDreampot took part in their first-ever walking football session, bringing together fun, friendship and positivity on the pitch.

Vivian Wallace, who recently received a cheque on behalf of WFS from the Sing in the City choirs, was once again on hand to support as the group tried walking football for the very first time.

The inaugural session was full of smiles, encouragement and energy, showing just how powerful walking football can be in bringing people together and creating new opportunities for people to stay active, connected and supported.

A brilliant first session for everyone involved — and hopefully the start of something that continues to grow. 👏⚽💙

Oriam Lift Gala Fairydean Tournament in Support of Prostate Scotland 💙🏆

Congratulations to Oriam Walking Football Club, who were crowned champions of the annual Gala Fairydean Rovers Walking Football Tournament, an event that once again combined competitive football with fundraising for a fantastic cause.

Held in aid of Prostate Scotland, the tournament welcomed clubs from across the country for a day of high-quality walking football, with every team contributing to a fundraising total of more than £1,200 to support the charity's vital work.

Oriam produced an outstanding series of performances throughout the day, progressing through the group stages with victories over Hearts, Dunfermline, Dunbar, Tweedvale and hosts Gala Fairydean Rovers before defeating defending champions Linlithgow Rose 5-3 in an entertaining final.

Following their victory, Oriam were presented with the Hugh Nicolson Trophy, named in memory of a much-loved member of the club, by Andrew Nicolson, Hugh's son, alongside Stewart Clark, an ambassador for Prostate Scotland.

A huge congratulations go to Oriam on their success, to Gala Fairydean Rovers Community Trust for organising another excellent tournament, and to every club that took part and helped raise such a fantastic amount for Prostate Scotland.

The event was another wonderful example of how walking football continues to bring communities together, honour those who have made a lasting contribution to the game, and make a real difference through charitable fundraising. 👏⚽💙

Oriam Players Day Celebrates Football, Community and Giving Back ⚽💙

More than 60 players came together at Oriam – Scotland's Sports Performance Centre for Oriam Walking Football Club's annual Players Day, a celebration of football, friendship and community spirit.

Held on the largest indoor synthetic pitch in Europe, the event saw club members enjoy a day of friendly competition before coming together for refreshments in the Oriam Lounge.

Congratulations to Reddy Or Not, captained by Carol Gilbert, who emerged victorious in the day's tournament.

As always, the event was about much more than football. Players raised £330 for the club's 2026 charity partner, Care & Repair Edinburgh, an organisation that carries out more than 6,000 jobs each year to support older and disabled residents across the city.

The day also marked the conclusion of a week-long food drive in support of Community for Food, with the club presenting the charity with a £500 donation to help continue its invaluable work supporting families in South West Edinburgh.

Adding to the celebrations, Ewan Duffy was presented with a special award in recognition of earning his first Scotland Walking Football international cap, a proud moment for both Ewan and the club.

Another fantastic example of walking football making a positive difference both on and off the pitch. Congratulations to everyone at Oriam for a superb day of football, fundraising and community support. 👏⚽💙

Alloa Athletic Honour Scotland International Derek Beveridge 🏴⚽

There was a special moment at Alloa Athletic Walking Football Club as Derek Beveridge was presented with an engraved tankard by his teammates in recognition of his recent selection for the first-ever Scotland Walking Football national team.

The presentation celebrated Derek's achievement in representing Scotland at the inaugural UEFA EURO Cup in Switzerland, where he proudly became one of the country's first official walking football internationals.

The engraved tankard was a fitting tribute from his fellow players, recognising not only his international achievement but also his dedication and commitment to both Alloa Athletic and Walking Football Scotland over many years.

Congratulations once again to Derek on this well-deserved recognition and on becoming part of Scottish walking football history. 👏🏴⚽🏆

Jeanfield Swifts Women Finish Runners-Up at Sweden Cup 🇸🇪⚽

A huge well done to Jeanfield Swifts Women, who produced a fantastic effort to finish runners-up in the Over 60s category at the Sweden Cup in Malmo.

The squad gave everything throughout the tournament, showing real quality, determination and team spirit across a demanding schedule. Overall, Jeanfield recorded five wins, two draws and two defeats, with the final proving just one step too far on this occasion.

There was also concern for captain Joanie Masterton, a Scotland internationalist, who was unfortunately injured during the semi-final. Everyone wishes Joanie a full and speedy recovery.

Despite the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the trophy, the whole squad can be incredibly proud of their achievement and the way they represented their club and Scottish walking football on the international stage.

A brilliant effort from all involved — they truly left it all on the pitch. 👏🇸🇪⚽

Player of the Month (June) - Cindy Halliday & David Ampleford

As June comes to an end, we’re proud to once again shine a spotlight on the people who make Walking Football Scotland’s Players of the Month so special—once again in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

🌟 June Women’s Player of the Month
Cindy Halliday (69) – Saints Kirkcudbright & Scotland

🌟 June Men’s Player of the Month
David Ampleford (43) – Universal Wanderers

Huge congratulations to Cindy and David!

Both shared their reflections on what walking football means to them, highlighting the friendships, health benefits and sense of belonging that keep our community moving forward 💙⚽

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Cindy: “I’ve loved football all my life, but when I was at school, girls were not allowed to play in teams so when my children came along, I decided to do the next best thing and become a football coach. In 2023 I saw an advert for Walking Football in Kirkcudbright so decided to go along and try. I was hooked! From there, with the backing of Saint Cuthberts F.C, I set up a women’s group and now coach them weekly and encourage others to come along and try it out.”

David: “I got involved after my Step-Dad, Finlay took me along to a session at Inverkip. I really enjoyed it. I also had a follow-up game with Alzheimers Scotland on the indoor pitch at Hampden. I started playing for The Gerihatricks in EK who kindly let me join in their sessions. I decided to set up my own club to try and help improve mental health in younger people in the area. We set up just before Covid. I was worried that Covid might have impacted the team but we came back even stronger. The team has really grown and we’ve become a family. We have A LOT of fun while we play and try to help our opponents enjoy their game too. ”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Cindy: “Walking Football has introduced me to so many new friends, improved my fitness and made me realise that age is no barrier. I have just had the honour of representing Scotland in Switzerland and the memories made there will last forever. This would never have happened had I not got involved with Walking Football Scotland.”

David: “Its had a great impact. Having broken my heels in 2012, I never thought I’d be able to enjoy football again but here we are. I really like it. Sometimes on Tuesdays if I’ve had a tough day at work its tough to motivate myself to get along but every time I do, I am so glad I did as I leave much happier.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Cindy: “If you are over 40 years old and would like to improve your fitness, help your mental well-being, meet new friends, and play walking football in a safe environment, then please contact your local team as you would be made most welcome. You don’t even need to have kicked a ball to be able to take part. This fantastic game is designed for all abilities and the rules for Walking Football make it an easy game to master for everyone. And remember…it’s never too late to try!”

David: “Its a great opportunity to get out the house, do exercise and meet other people. A load of fun too.”
