Player of the Month (June) - Cindy Halliday & David Ampleford

As June comes to an end, we’re proud to once again shine a spotlight on the people who make Walking Football Scotland’s Players of the Month so special—once again in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

🌟 June Women’s Player of the Month
Cindy Halliday (69) – Saints Kirkcudbright & Scotland

🌟 June Men’s Player of the Month
David Ampleford (43) – Universal Wanderers

Huge congratulations to Cindy and David!

Both shared their reflections on what walking football means to them, highlighting the friendships, health benefits and sense of belonging that keep our community moving forward 💙⚽

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Cindy: “I’ve loved football all my life, but when I was at school, girls were not allowed to play in teams so when my children came along, I decided to do the next best thing and become a football coach. In 2023 I saw an advert for Walking Football in Kirkcudbright so decided to go along and try. I was hooked! From there, with the backing of Saint Cuthberts F.C, I set up a women’s group and now coach them weekly and encourage others to come along and try it out.”

David: “I got involved after my Step-Dad, Finlay took me along to a session at Inverkip. I really enjoyed it. I also had a follow-up game with Alzheimers Scotland on the indoor pitch at Hampden. I started playing for The Gerihatricks in EK who kindly let me join in their sessions. I decided to set up my own club to try and help improve mental health in younger people in the area. We set up just before Covid. I was worried that Covid might have impacted the team but we came back even stronger. The team has really grown and we’ve become a family. We have A LOT of fun while we play and try to help our opponents enjoy their game too. ”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Cindy: “Walking Football has introduced me to so many new friends, improved my fitness and made me realise that age is no barrier. I have just had the honour of representing Scotland in Switzerland and the memories made there will last forever. This would never have happened had I not got involved with Walking Football Scotland.”

David: “Its had a great impact. Having broken my heels in 2012, I never thought I’d be able to enjoy football again but here we are. I really like it. Sometimes on Tuesdays if I’ve had a tough day at work its tough to motivate myself to get along but every time I do, I am so glad I did as I leave much happier.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Cindy: “If you are over 40 years old and would like to improve your fitness, help your mental well-being, meet new friends, and play walking football in a safe environment, then please contact your local team as you would be made most welcome. You don’t even need to have kicked a ball to be able to take part. This fantastic game is designed for all abilities and the rules for Walking Football make it an easy game to master for everyone. And remember…it’s never too late to try!”

David: “Its a great opportunity to get out the house, do exercise and meet other people. A load of fun too.”

WFS National Team in Switzerland

History made for Walking Football Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This week marked a truly historic milestone as our first-ever WFS National Team proudly represented Scotland at the 2nd UEFA Walking Football EuroCup in Nyon, Switzerland supported by Summer of Sport.

The tournament was an incredible experience from start to finish. Drawn alongside Croatia, Czechia and Greece, the team produced outstanding performances to top Group A with a perfect 9 points from 9, becoming the only nation across both groups to complete the group stage with a 100% record.

Victories over Czechia (3-0), Croatia (1-0) and Greece (3-2) earned a place in the semi-finals, where a high-quality Italy side edged us out 2-1 in a fiercely contested encounter. In the third-place play-off, the soaring Swiss temperatures and an excellent Spanish team proved just too much, with Scotland finishing an outstanding 4th place in our first-ever international competition.

While the results on the pitch were something to celebrate, this week represented so much more.

It demonstrated how far walking football in Scotland has come. From local community sessions and affiliated clubs across the country to competing under the UEFA banner, this is a journey built on the dedication of players, volunteers, coaches, officials and supporters over many years.

A heartfelt thank you to UEFA for delivering such a memorable event and to our exceptional Team Liaison Officer, Mirren Lachendro, whose professionalism, kindness and support made our experience truly unforgettable.

To every player who wore the Scotland shirt this week—thank you for representing our country with pride, humility and passion. You have inspired the next generation of walking footballers and shown what is possible.

This isn’t the end of the journey.

It’s just the beginning.

Our Nation. Our Team. Our Time.

Club News

From honouring footballing legends and celebrating community heroes to international adventures, charity fundraising and major events, it has been another memorable period for walking football across Scotland. These stories perfectly capture the diversity of our game and the many ways clubs continue to make a positive impact both on and off the pitch.

Whether it’s remembering those who have left a lasting legacy, creating new opportunities for participation, raising vital funds for good causes or simply bringing people together through a shared love of football, the walking football community continues to go from strength to strength.

Ayrshire Walking Football Community Honours Jim Fleeting’s Legacy ❤️⚽

The Ayrshire walking football community recently came together at The Circuit for the Jim Fleeting Memorial Walking Football Festival, an event held in memory of one of Scottish football’s most respected figures organised by KA Leisure.

Originally planned as part of the build-up to the World Cup, the festival took on added significance following the sad passing of Jim Fleeting earlier this year. A giant of Ayrshire and Scottish football, Jim made an immense contribution to the game as a player, coach, educator and mentor, touching countless lives throughout his career.

Teams representing North, South and East Ayrshire took part in the festival, with clubs and players reflecting many of the areas and organisations that Jim had been associated with over the years. It was particularly fitting to see two teams from KA Leisure involved, where Jim was not only a colleague but also a friend and teammate to many.

Teams from Largs, Ayr United, Carrick Maybole, Whitletts, Stewarton and Glenafton Athletic also took part, representing communities and clubs connected to various stages of Jim’s football journey.

A special moment came as Jim’s wife Irene, daughters Gemma and Julie, son Barry and other family members joined participants to present the trophy and share in the occasion.

Congratulations to Carrick Team 2, who lifted the inaugural memorial trophy, but more importantly, well done to KA Leisure and everyone who took part in such a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to football.

The festival was a wonderful celebration of Jim’s legacy and a reminder of the lasting impact he had on football throughout Ayrshire and beyond. ❤️👏⚽

Women’s Walking Footballers Enjoy Inaugural Algarve Playcation ☀️⚽

Walking football is about so much more than the action on the pitch, and that was perfectly demonstrated by the success of the first-ever Algarve Playcation, a unique initiative bringing together women who share a love of football, friendship and adventure.

The idea was the brainchild of Joanie and Anne from Jeanfield Swifts, who worked alongside Algarve Football Tours and EuroCopa Walking Football Tournaments to turn their vision into reality.

The event attracted many women from Scotland, alongside participants from elsewhere in the UK, who travelled either individually or in small groups to enjoy a relaxed and enjoyable football holiday centred around participation, wellbeing and social connection.

While walking football remained at the heart of the week, participants also enjoyed a range of activities including boat trips, kayaking, yoga, padel and pickleball, as well as plenty of opportunities to socialise and explore the Algarve together.

Most importantly, the Playcation created lasting memories, strengthened existing friendships and forged many new ones, highlighting once again the unique community spirit that walking football provides.

World Cup Spirit on Display at St Mirren Walking Football Festival 🌍⚽

There was a fantastic World Cup atmosphere as St Mirren Charitable Foundation hosted a special World Cup-themed Walking Football event, bringing participants together for an enjoyable evening of football, fun and friendly competition.

Players proudly pulled on the colours of nations from across the globe, representing countries from every corner of the footballing world as they battled it out in a series of matches inspired by the FIFA World Cup.

The event was a brilliant celebration of the game, with plenty of smiles, great football and good-natured rivalry on display throughout the evening. More importantly, it showcased the inclusive and social nature of walking football, bringing people together through a shared love of the sport.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped create such a memorable occasion. Events like these continue to demonstrate how walking football can engage communities, promote wellbeing and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful game. 👏⚽🏆🌍

Stranraer Continue to Grow the Game Across Wigtownshire 💙🤍⚽

Stranraer FC Walking Football Club and organiser Gary Small continue to do fantastic work promoting walking football throughout the local community, bringing the game to new audiences and highlighting the many benefits it can offer.

The latest stop on their journey saw the group visit Castle Kennedy School Park, where participants enjoyed an evening of football, fun and social interaction in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The session formed part of the club’s ongoing efforts to showcase walking football across villages and communities throughout the area, encouraging people of all abilities to get involved, stay active and enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits that the game provides.

A huge credit goes to Gary and everyone involved at Stranraer FC Walking Football Club for their continued commitment to growing the game and creating opportunities for more people to experience the joy of walking football.

Long may the excellent work continue. 👏⚽💙🤍

Glasgow Cup Series Off to Flying Start at Toryglen ⚽🏆

The 2026 Walking Football Glasgow Cup series has got off to a fantastic start at Toryglen Regional Football Centre, with two hugely successful events already completed and hundreds of players taking part.

The series opened on National Movement Day with the inaugural Men’s Over 75s Glasgow Cup, where five teams from across Scotland competed to become the first-ever champions in this age category. A total of 50 players took part, demonstrating that football truly is a game for life. After a closely contested day of action, Fife Wanderers were crowned champions following a 1-0 victory over Drumchapel United in the final.

Coyne Cup Raises £1,000 for Charity in Memory of Loved One ❤️⚽

The walking football community recently came together for the inaugural Coyne Cup, a special event organised in memory of a much-loved family member whose legacy continues to inspire those closest to them.

The tournament brought together players, friends and families for a day filled with football, friendship and fundraising, with a fantastic standard of play on display throughout. There was no shortage of quality and competitiveness on show, highlighting the growing strength of walking football across Scotland.

On the pitch, congratulations go to the Coyne Family Team, who lifted the Coyne Cup, while Drumchapel United were delighted to take home the Shield.

However, the true success of the day came away from the football itself. Thanks to the incredible generosity of everyone who attended, supported and donated, the event raised approximately £1,000, with proceeds being shared between Macmillan Cancer Support and Live Life Give Life, supporting vital work carried out by both charities.

Special thanks were also extended to all the players and supporters who gave up part of their Father’s Day to attend and help make the event such a memorable occasion.

A wonderful tribute, a fantastic day of football, and a fitting way to honour a loved one’s memory while making a positive difference to others. 👏❤️⚽🏆

As these stories demonstrate, walking football is far more than just a game. It is about friendship, wellbeing, community, inclusion and creating opportunities for people to stay active and connected at every stage of life. A huge congratulations to all the clubs, players, volunteers and organisers featured in this round-up for their continued dedication and enthusiasm.

We look forward to bringing you more stories from across Scotland as the season continues and the walking football family continues to grow. ⚽👏💙🏆❤️

WFS National Team Is Ready For Nyon!

Our Nation. Our Team. Our Time.

This week, Walking Football Scotland will make history as our first-ever WFS National Team travels to Switzerland to compete in the second UEFA Walking Football EuroCup event in Nyon.

It is a landmark moment not only for the players selected, but for everyone who has played a part in the growth and development of walking football across Scotland over the past decade.

The squad represents clubs from across the country, each player proudly wearing the colours of their local team throughout the season. However, this week is different. This week they come together with one purpose – to represent Scotland on the international stage.

Every affiliated club, every volunteer, every coach, every referee and every player has contributed to this moment. The journey to Nyon is the result of years of dedication, passion and belief in the power of walking football to transform lives and bring communities together.

For many of our players, this will be the opportunity of a lifetime. To wear the Scotland badge, stand alongside fellow nations and represent our country in an official UEFA event is something that only a few years ago seemed impossible.

The significance of this moment stretches far beyond the nine players who will pull on the shirt. They carry with them the hopes and pride of the entire Scottish walking football community. They represent the thousands of people who take part in walking football every week, the hundreds of volunteers who give their time freely, and the remarkable growth of our game from grassroots sessions to international recognition.

As the team prepares to depart, we wish every player and member of the management team the very best of luck. We know they will represent Walking Football Scotland, their clubs and their country with pride, passion and distinction.

This is more than a team.

This is more than a tournament.

This is the next step in Scotland's walking football journey.

Our Nation. Our Team. Our Time.
