It’s been another action-packed period for walking football clubs across Scotland, with inspiring workshops, international tournaments, regional trials, and heartfelt celebrations. Here’s a look at what’s been happening across the community.

Parkinson's Workshop at Glasgow University

We were delighted to recently deliver a Parkinson’s Walking Football workshop to students at Glasgow University. The session was led by trustee Matt Ramsay and our dedicated Parkinson’s physiotherapist, Lois Rosenthal. This initiative marks the beginning of an exciting collaboration, as the students will now explore how the programme impacts the lives of people living with Parkinson’s. A huge thank you to everyone involved in helping raise awareness and understanding of this vital work.

Jeanfield Swifts Impress in the Algarve

The Jeanfield Swifts returned as proud runners-up from the prestigious Algarve Invitational Tournament. As ever, the team had a fantastic experience, joining forces with Midlothian Ladies for a week full of football, laughter, new friendships, and unforgettable memories. It was a brilliant reminder of the spirit and community that defines walking football.

Regional Trials

The North East O60’s and West O70’s Region held their latest trials as they gear up for the upcoming Regional Cup in June. Under the watchful eyes of the experienced management duo John McDonald and Steve Ross and Gary Caldwell and Gary Gallagher respectively, players put their skills to the test in what promises to be a competitive squad selection. Best of luck to all involved as preparations continue!

Raith Rovers Host John Cunningham Memorial Festival

Raith Rovers Walking Football once again proudly hosted the John Cunningham Memorial Festival at Starks Park, Kirkcaldy. Bathed in sunshine, 41 walking footballers took to the pitches on Sunday to celebrate the sport and remember a teammate who truly loved the game. Now in its third year, the festival was a fantastic day of fun, camaraderie, and sport.

In recognition of the day’s success, the club will be donating £300 to CHAS and £300 to Epilepsy Scotland. Huge congratulations to organisers Charles Doherty and Willie Carroll for another memorable event that captured the heart of the walking football community.

If your club has news to share—whether it's a tournament, a celebration, or something special happening in your community—please get in touch with us. We'd love to help tell your story.

O40's WOMEN'S PREMIERSHIP & CHAMPIONSHIP

It was a standout day for Braehead FC at the WFS O40's Women's Premiership Round 2, held today at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, as the club took control at the top of both the Premiership and Championship tables.

In the Premiership, Braehead – Reds continued their unbeaten run, making it six wins from six as they claimed another vital victory, this time against 2nd-placed Linlithgow Rose – Whites. Their consistent form has opened up a commanding 5-point lead at the halfway stage of the season.

Over in the Championship, Braehead – Blacks also impressed, winning all three of their fixtures to go joint top with Tay City Strollers. Braehead – Blacks edge the standings by a single goal, making for an exciting battle as both sides head into the second half of the campaign.

We extend our thanks to all the players, referees, and volunteers for contributing to another fantastic day of walking football. We now look forward to welcoming everyone back for the second half of the season on Sunday, 7th September.

O50's WOMEN'S PREMIERSHIP

The WFS O50's Women's Premiership returned in style today at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, where Braehead FC asserted their dominance with crucial victories that have opened up a commanding 6-point lead at the top of the table.

In a thrilling day of walking football, Braehead FC took on 2nd place Giffnock SC in a tightly contested match, emerging victorious through composed play and clinical finishing. They followed up with another impressive performance against 3rd place Linlithgow Rose, securing another win and solidifying their place at the summit.

With these results, Braehead now hold a 6-point cushion, placing them in a strong position heading into the second half of the season.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the players and referees for their spirit, sportsmanship, and contribution to a fantastic day of walking football. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the second half of the season on Sunday, 7th September, when the race for the title resumes.

WFS O70's West Premiership

The action returned to Toryglen Regional Football Centre today for Round 2 of the WFS Over 70’s West of Scotland League—and it was Duncanrig EK who once again showed their dominance.

Building on their strong start to the season, Duncanrig EK continued their unbeaten run, securing vital wins including a key victory over second-placed Townhead Strollers. Their consistent form sees them sitting five points clear at the halfway mark, firmly in control at the top of the table.

Townhead Strollers, despite today’s setback, remain in second place, two points ahead of a tightly contested chasing pack of three teams, all battling for those all-important top three spots that offer qualification for the Champions League stage.

As always, the day was marked by excellent sportsmanship and competitive spirit, with thanks owed to all players, referees, and regional representatives for their commitment and support in making the league such a success.

We now look ahead to the next round of fixtures and look forward to welcoming everyone back to Toryglen on Friday 12th September.

WFS O70's East Premiership

The sun shone on the Oriam National Performance Centre today as Round 2 of the WFS Over 70’s East of Scotland League delivered another exciting day of walking football. All eyes were on the league leaders—and Alloa Athletic did not disappoint.

With an outstanding performance, Alloa won all four of their matches once again, making it a perfect eight wins from eight so far this season. They now sit comfortably at the top of the table, six points clear of their nearest rivals, North Lanarkshire Council.

North Lanarkshire continue to push hard, securing their place in second and sitting three points ahead of a tightly packed group of three clubs all level on points. With only the top three teams qualifying for the Champions League spots, the race is heating up as we move into the business end of the season.

However, today was about more than just football.

There was a deep sense of respect and reflection as the walking football community paid tribute to Mark Harris, a beloved member of the Stenhousemuir team, who sadly passed away in his sleep on 8th May. Mark was not only a dedicated player at Ochilview Park but also a treasured presence whose warmth, friendliness, and unmistakable dry sense of humour left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In a moving tribute, Stenhousemuir and Alloa Athletic wore black armbands, and all teams took part in a heartfelt minute’s applause in Mark’s memory.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the players, referees, and regional representatives for their continued support and sportsmanship. We now look ahead to the next round of fixtures and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Friday 5th September.

WFS Women's O40's & O50's Premiership & Championship

The action resumes this Sunday at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility as Round 2 of the WFS Women’s Over 40s Premiership and Championship, along with the Women’s Over 50s League, promises another thrilling day of football.

In the O40’s Premiership, Linlithgow Rose Whites currently sit top of the table by a single point—but with one more game played than reigning champions Braehead. The two sides are set to meet in a crucial fixture that could prove pivotal in shaping this season’s title race.

The Championship is proving equally competitive, with three teams locked together at the top on 7 points following Round 1. Tay City Strollers and Stenhousemuir will battle it out directly, while Braehead will be looking to capitalize and gain ground if results go their way.

In the Women’s Over 50s Premiership, Braehead Reds and Giffnock Women are also tied at the top, and they face each other in what is shaping up to be a standout encounter of the day.

With so many top-of-the-table clashes on the schedule, Sunday promises excitement, intensity, and plenty of quality walking football. Best of luck to all teams competing!

WFS O70's East Premiership

Excitement is building ahead of Round 2 in the WFS East Over-70s League, taking place this Friday at the Oriam National Performance Centre. The league table is finely poised, with Alloa Athletic and Fife Wanderers currently sharing top spot after a strong showing in the opening round.

The headline fixture sees the joint-leaders go head-to-head in a much-anticipated clash that could shape the early title race. However, North Lanarkshire Council may have the biggest say in how the table looks by the end of the day. Sitting just three points behind the leaders, they’ll face both Alloa and Fife on Friday, knowing that two strong performances could propel them to the summit.

With pride, points, and position all on the line, it’s set to be a thrilling day of walking football at Oriam. We wish all teams the very best of luck as Round 2 gets underway!

WFS O70's West Premiership

Anticipation is building ahead of Round 2 in the WFS West Over-70s League, taking place this Friday at the Toryglen Regional Football Centre. After a dramatic opening round, all eyes are on the league newcomers, EK Duncanrig, who made a statement in their debut by storming to the top of the table, four points clear of their nearest challengers.

Their closest rivals? None other than the experienced Townhead Strollers, who currently sit in second place and are eager to close the gap. Fittingly, the two sides will meet in the opening match of the day – a potential early decider in the race for the title. With both teams boasting strong starts, it promises to be a thrilling contest full of determination, teamwork, and terrific walking football.

Elsewhere, the rest of the pack will be looking to climb the standings and make their mark in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive season.

We wish all teams taking part the very best of luck for Round 2 and look forward to another exciting day of action at Toryglen!

WFS O60's West Premiership & Championship

Toryglen Regional Football Centre was once again buzzing with energy and competitive spirit as Round 2 of the WFS Over 60’s West Premiership and Championship took centre stage today. With the season now at its halfway mark, key battles are beginning to take shape at both ends of the tables.

In the Premiership, it’s advantage Glasgow Life, who extended their lead at the summit by seven points. Their unbeaten consistent form has given them a significant cushion as the campaign intensifies. With the race for Champions League qualification heating up, just 2 points separate the next five teams, setting up a thrilling second half of the season where every point will count.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Saint Anthony’s continued their remarkable run, securing four consecutive wins on the day. Their dominance sees them also seven points clear at the top, reinforcing their status as promotion favourites. Drumchapel United also had a strong outing, climbing to second place with a series of solid performances that kept them in the hunt.

Today’s fixtures were marked not just by competitive play but also by sportsmanship and community spirit, hallmarks of the walking football movement. Walking Football Scotland extends sincere thanks to all players, referees, and regional representatives for their dedication and support throughout the event.

With momentum building and storylines unfolding, attention now turns to the next round, which will take place on Friday, 5th September.

Player of the Month (April) - Dot Low & Graham Robertson

We’re keeping up with our monthly spotlight on Walking Football Scotland Players of the Month in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

For April the Walking Football Scotland Women’s Player of the Month is Dot Low! Dot, 60, plays with Midlothian Ladies.

Walking Football Scotland Men’s Player of the Month is Graham Robertson! Graham, 67, plays with Fife Wanderers.

Congratulations Dot and Graham! They shared their reflections on what walking football means to them.

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Dot: I got involved with walking football as my mum had just passed away and I need something to get me out and replace that time.”

Graham: “I had been out of football, 5s and 7s, for 5 years or so after an injury and was invited to a come and see walking football by a friend. I watched for 10 minutes thinking “hmmmm slow, looks too easy” but when I went along the next week to take part, I totally changed my mind. I’d found football again and I have played ever since. Good exercise twice a week at least, good but friendly competition at every level and great friends made with weekly banter to look forward to.”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Dot: “It has been an amazing change in my life and taken me all the way back to my childhood. It has been great playing the sport that I love and being part of a special group of ladies.”

Graham: “I didn’t really have an exercise regime and walking football has given me a decent fitness level which has helped all round whether walking, DIY and cycling. Also the friendships I have made amongst local and competition people has been amazing and I am very grateful for this on a personal level. I also organise things for my club and although it’s a big task, I realised I missed this business involvement after I’d retired. It’s good to chat and a joke with everyone and help or be helped whether it’s a small matter or otherwise.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Dot: “Come along and keep fit, meet new friends, play a sport that is for all ages, inclusive and part of a group that people look out for you and can help and support you when struggling in life.”

Graham: “I would say that it is a great way to meet new friends and have a regular weekly get together with them. Also it’s a decent way to get fitter and maintain a reasonable level of fitness that suits the person. Also it gets you out of the house and the wife also encourages it…”
