Player of the Month (August) - Leeanne Higginson & Ewan Duffy

As August comes to an end, we’re proud to once again shine a spotlight on the people who make Walking Football Scotland’s Players of the Month so special—once again in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

🌟 August Women’s Player of the Month
Leeanne Higginson (59) – Midlothian Ladies

🌟 August Men’s Player of the Month
Ewan Duffy (65) - Oriam

Huge congratulations to Leeanne and Ewan!

Both shared their reflections on what walking football means to them, highlighting the friendships, health benefits and sense of belonging that keep our community moving forward 💙⚽

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Leeanne: “When I was asked to get involved, I had never actually heard of walking football but I thought why not? I'll give it a go. At the time of being asked (although I didn't know it) I was suffering severe menopausal symptoms and I felt a bit lost and low in motivation.”

Ewan: “After retiring I was no longer able to  play contact football  but was introduced to Walking Football by my good friend Paul Burns, who took me along to The Oriam, of which I became a member and joined their teams.”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Leeanne: “My physical wellbeing has improved by regular exercise but more than anything my mental wellbeing has improved tenfold. Since joining I am now part of a fantastic group of similar age, likeminded women. We share and discuss everyday subjects and it's great hearing of each other's experiences and opinions. We even go on team bonding outings and holidays.”

Ewan: “Being part of the Oriam Family has helped me with keeping fit and active and I have met a great group of people and also has give some form of structure to retired life.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Leeanne: “It's a great way to keep fit but more than that you get to be a part of a group of people that make you feel like you belong. You get to meet lots of people and have fun and great new experiences. Try it - you've nothing to lose”

Ewan: “Don't be put off by the name ‘Walking Football’ - you can get the heart rate and fitness up just the same a a game of fives ,you'll meet like minded people and will have a great time”
