We also say a massive well done and welcome to competitive walking football to so many teams across the country who took part for the very first time today.

WFS would finally like to thank all our volunteer Regional Reps for their support in all their tasks today as without them, our leagues wouldn’t run as smoothly as they do.

Please see below league tables and results from today’s Over 50’s Leagues.

Player of the Month (January) - Steve Winstanley & Linsey Paton-Donaldson

As 2024 kicks off in collaboration with our charity partners, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, we’re getting the ball rolling with a spotlight on a new feature - Player of the Month!

For January the Walking Football Scotland Player of the Month is Steve Winstanley & Linsey Paton-Donaldson, congratulations both!

Steve, 71, plays with the Dunfermline Dynamos and Fife Wanderers. Steve shared his reflections on what Walking Football means to him.

Why did you get involved in walking football?

I always loved football and played, often 2 of 3 times a week until I was 40. After that I thought my footballing days would just be watching others play in the park and thinking “I could do better than that”, so when I saw the posters in my local leisure centre in 2019 for Walking Football I thought I’d give it a try and I was hooked! My love of playing had been re-ignited and I’ve never looked back.”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

“Apart from improving my general level of fitness and mental well being, I have met and made friends with so many other like minded people through walking football. I look forward to our sessions and the friendly banter that goes with it and the social side afterwards. Plus if you still have a competitive edge, Walking Football Scotland has several leagues you could play in.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

“If you see it advertised locally or on the internet, go for it, you won’t regret it. Everyone is treated the same, even if you’ve never played before and it’s a great way to make new friends and get out of the house.”

Linsey, 41, plays with Stenhousemuir FCCT and Linlithgow Rose. Linsey shared her reflections on what Walking Football means to her.

Why did you get involved in walking football?

“I played for many years when I was younger but required surgery due to having ulcerative colitis and, despite my best efforts at the time, this eventually stopped me from playing. I was later diagnosed with a liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and have been listed for a liver transplant. I missed being active and socialising. Plus, to survive the transplant, it has become even more important to maintain my cardiovascular health and mental wellbeing so that I have a better prognosis – walking football provided a platform to exercise safely whilst meeting people and having fun. It ticked every box.”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

“Meeting so many brilliant people.  Walking Football Scotland is a huge family community.  Everyone is made welcome at sessions, regardless of their background, ability or home club. I am physically active several times a week, have made many new friends and we now participate in a range of different activities and social events. I have a new purpose in my life and through taking part and volunteering for other activities with Stenhousemuir, I have now been employed by their Community Trust and I’m doing a job that I love. Being able to compete and have fun doing it is a bonus.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

“Don’t make assumptions about the game. It’s football with a difference. It doesn’t matter if you have played before, you’ll always be made welcome. It provides a level of physical activity that will contribute to improving your health with regular participation, but you are in control of the level of exertion and the laws of the game (walking, 3-touches, no contact) really do help to level the playing field so that anyone can turn up, join in and have fun. You won’t regret joining the Walking Football Scotland family.”

Over 50’s - last season’s champions Arbroath commence the season against previous winners St James at the RPC Dundee whereas it’s a change of venue for the West of Scotland League where last year’s champions Giffnock SC Auld Timers take on last year’s Scottish Cup winners, Pollok Utd.

Over 60’s - it’s a new tiered approach for this age category with Premiership and Championship divisions for both East and West of the country. Last year’s winners, North Lanarkshire Council open the season with a match against Drumchapel Utd whereas in the East there is a Fife derby with Fife Wanderers taking on Dunfermline Dynamos.

Over 40’s & Over 50’s Women’s - with continual growth in the women’s game we have a tiered over 40’s league as well as additional Over 50’s age category for 2024. Linlithgow Rose - Whites who were crowned champions for the first time last year, will commence against Linlithgow Rose - Blacks in the Over 40’s and in the Over 50’s we kick off with Midlothian Ladies V Jeanfield Swifts, the two longest playing women’s teams in Scotland.

League fixtures have been sent out to club main contacts for the upcoming season and we look forward to what will no doubt be an exciting competitive season ahead, wishing all teams all the very best for 2024.

Laws of the Game - 2024 Update

As clubs begin to re-commence their walking football for the New Year, we look to continue the enhancement of our game by providing an update of the supplementary laws of the game.

These tweaks and improvements focus on player safety and we encourage all players and clubs to support the implementation of these changes within their weekly sessions.

As part of these developments we have provided the appropriate documents, with changes highlighted, and these can be downloaded from our website here -

https://www.walkingfootballscotland.org/rules

We have also provide video demonstrations of these laws within our YouTube channel which is available here - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyqYsQsPQDaQ8UovcLYTvcYbWy9llvhs1&si=r5nokguqC_rxJS44

Thank you for your co-operation as we continue to support the development of our game.

FOOTBALL MEMORIES SCOTLAND

Football Memories Scotland & Walking Football Scotland launch partnership project to increase support for local communities

Two organisations with football at their hearts have joined forces to showcase the benefits that football has to offer on both physical and mental health.

Football Memories Scotland and Walking Football Scotland launched the first session in an innovative new partnership project at Hampden Park last week which brought together walking football and reminiscence sessions, with 10 more such days planned for next year.

A newly drafted memorandum of understanding has been put in place to bring two organisations closer together than ever before. Football Memories Scotland and Walking Football Scotland both reach thousands of people across the country every week between their respective group activities and have a similar target audience, so the project aims to develop more ‘blended’ clubs around the country that can deliver both walking football and football reminiscence sessions.

Members of Whitletts Victoria F.C. based in Ayrshire were the first group to trial the new partnership project. Club staff and members enjoyed a tour of Hampden Park and the Scottish Football Museum, led by the knowledgeable Visitor Services Officers of the Museum. Tour highlights include the newly opened Scottish Cup Gallery, History Makers Gallery celebrating the men’s and women’s game as part of the 150 years of Scottish football celebrations and seeing the home and away dressing rooms of the national stadium. The group was then split into two teams and after changing their tops and boots in the stadium’s home dressing room, went head-to-head in a game of Walking Football, led by Walking Football Scotland

Competitive spirits ran high as players then tested the speed of their shot against each other, before settling into the Hall of Fame gallery for a reminiscence session with Football Memories Scotland volunteers Robert Harvey and Arthur Grant who shared information about the project, its impact and ways to get involved. The staff and players of Whitletts Vics also had the chance to browse old memorabilia used in reminiscence group sessions to trigger memories and discussions, which inevitably brought through lots of fond personal memories and anecdotes of football of the past.

Collaboration between the two Game Leaders of the Scottish Para Football Association isn’t new, but this new wave of proactive mutual support comes at a time of growth for both organisations, as both reminiscence groups and walking football teams continue to increase in number rapidly across Scotland.

There are now over 500 Football Memories groups in Scotland, from as far north as Stornoway and as far south as Stranraer, with trained volunteers delivering group sessions on a regular basis in community settings, care homes and hospitals. To support the delivery of reminiscence sessions alongside walking football groups, the Football Memories Scotland team is providing Walking Football Scotland leaders with training and information on reminiscence and working with those who live with dementia.

Walking Football Scotland has over 140 groups across Scotland, with over 3,500 players taking part on a weekly basis. To support the delivery of physical activity sessions alongside groups, the reminiscence groups the WFS team is providing group leaders with information and opportunities on how groups could start their own walking football sessions in their communities.

Richard McBrearty, Project Director of Football Memories, said:

“Football exists in many forms and this partnership allows us to connect people not only to their treasured memories of the game but to the opportunity to be involved again in a game of football should they wish, delivered by trained coordinators who can support them and their carers and families.

We hope these partnership days will enable us to connect to Walking Football clubs across the country who are interested in the mutual benefits of both playing football and reminiscing about football that can help so many members of our local communities to feel part of the game they love, especially those who may be living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.”

Kenny McLean, President of Walking Football Scotland, said:

“We are delighted to be reaffirming our partnership with Football Memories Scotland. This memorandum of understanding shows that both organisations have a shared goal towards improving the social and mental health wellbeing of older adults in Scotland. This partnership is a perfect fit to support the growth of walking football and the engagement of older adults in their common interest in football and its history."

Louis Kerr, Community Football Coordinator for Vics in the Community said:

Everyone from our walking football group thoroughly enjoyed the day out at Hampden! The tour, getting changed in the dressing room and then enjoying a game in the iconic warm up area all ensured it was a special occasion for everyone involved. We learned about the power of Football Memories and the huge impact it has made across so many lives already. As a result, we'll be looking to start a group of our own soon. We'd like to thank Walking Football Scotland and Football Memories for providing this fantastic experience.”

Walking Football clubs that don’t currently run Football Memories groups are invited to contact project organisers to express interest in being part of a 2024 session at Hampden Park, which will run monthly. No costs are involved apart from the club’s provision of transport to Hampden Park on the day. Interested clubs should contact Matt Ramsay at matt@walkingfootballscotland.org

Ashley Pedersen, CEO of Scottish ParaFootball, commented:

“Football is much more than a physical game on the pitch. For many, regular sessions discussing the sport and its history serve as a lifeline to a social group; the comfort of familiarity; the reigniting of cherished memories.

“With a partnership that combines these benefits with playing the game at a pace that suits the players, serves not only to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of the older population, but demonstrates the power and flexibility of football as a tool to engage everyone in society.

“We look forward to seeing the impact of this partnership.”

Clubs interested in being part of these sessions in 2024 should contact: matt@walkingfootballscotland.org to register their interest.
