Today kicked off the competitive Walking Football season for the Over 50’s game with 2 divisions in the East of Scotland comprising of 8 teams in Premiership and 9 teams in the Championship respectively.

The league table shows last year’s Champions League winners, Arbroath top with last year’s Central Scotland League winners 2 points behind them in second place of the 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟱𝟬'𝘀 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 whereas in the 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, Dundee Utd CT are top after 4 wins.

From its outset, Arthur Duncan was one of Walking Football's strongest advocates. 

After he died in 2021, Walking Football Scotland launched a cup in his memory:- ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱’, for outstanding contribution to Walking Football in Scotland.  

Today marked its inaugural presentation (by Arthur’s widow Elaine) at the Regional Performance Centre, Dundee, to 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙨 𝙈𝙪𝙞𝙧 of Carnoustie Panmure for all her outstanding efforts in coaching, baking, fundraising and general organising for her team.

Sunday kicks off the competitive Walking Football season for 2023 for the Over 50’s game with the East of Scotland League at Regional Performance Centre, Dundee and West of Scotland League at Toryglen Regional Football Centre.

17 teams will battle it out in the East with 8 in the Premiership and 9 in the Championship, whilst 16 teams in the West with 8 in each Premiership and Championship will look to become 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟱𝟬'𝘀 Champions in their desired leagues and divisions.

There are a numbers of teams taking part in their first competitive walking football leagues and these include: Dundee FC, Falkirk Foundation, Glenbuck & Douglas Valley, Luncarty FC and Pollok Thistle but special welcome to Highland Utd who will be our further travelled team coming down from the North of Scotland to take part at the RPC, Dundee.

𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗸 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲!

Pollok United Walking Football Club returned to Glasgow on Monday laden with medals, and not one, but two magnificent trophies from their trip to Malaga, Spain.

On Saturday, in a gruelling all day walking football tournament in blazing sunshine, they edged out local favourites Malaga by 1 point, with the final game being decided in the last 30 seconds by a disputed penalty. With teams having driven over 500 kilometres to take part this was a magnificent effort by the Lok’, who were naturally spent but well chuffed as they accepted the trophy and the title El Canadon WF Champions.

What chance the next day then as 5 fresh teams turned up to contest the 6 a side Veterans Trophy where once again Pollok came out on top tournament defeating tournament favourites, Argentina. in a hard fought encounter.

Only after the game, as the dust settled, once again we witnessed the amazing power of our walking game. The matches became talking points and laughter could be heard everywhere. Refreshments were shared, the banter began and an amazing thing happened. People from all over the world, from every walk of life, regardless of their ethnicity, status or background came together in friendship, and lasting bonds were formed. It really is the beautiful game.

16 teams will battle it out to become National 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟲𝟱'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 Champions and we are delighted to be able to re-introduce this age category since Alloa Athletic and Pollok Utd were victorious in East and West of Scotland leagues respectively in 2021.

This National League welcomes teams from across Scotland including the likes of; Drumchapel Utd, Dunbar, Fife Wanderers, Linlithgow Rose, Motherwell FC, Townhead Strollers and St. Andrews & East Neuk.

Regional Reps - Club Visits

Our Regional Representatives have been out and about over the past month visiting their clubs to introduce themselves and looking at the ways we at how Walking Football Scotland can support our clubs at grassroots level.

Today we feature Regional Reps, Claire McCosh (Falkirk & Clackmannanshire Rep), Bill Sharp (Falkirk Rep), Kendell Cummings (Stirling) and Dave Milne (Angus Rep) as they have visited clubs including: 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙖 𝘼𝙩𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘, 𝘿𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙂𝙡𝙚𝙣, 𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙚𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙁𝘾, 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙧𝙠 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙎𝙖𝙪𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚 𝙅𝙣𝙧𝙨 and 𝘼𝙧𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙩𝙝.

Two new teams to competitive football, Falkirk Foundation and Glenbuck and Douglas Valley met in a friendly before the season commences and it was also good to hear players from Arbroath and Carnoustie Panmure also met to raise money for those affected by the recent Earthquake Disaster in Turkey and Syria.

Walking Football Scotland are saddened to hear of the passing of walking footballer, John Cunningham whilst taking part in a session this past week.

John loved his walking football, regularly attending the Raith Rovers sessions and played with a great spirit also enjoying the camaraderie the game brings.

We think of John’s family and the players of Raith Rovers WF at this time for a man that will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑾𝒂𝒍𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅
Arthur Duncan was a long-standing supporter and contributor to Walking Football in Scotland and was a fervent supporter of the social playing sessions and what it contributed to the “society” of players. Arthur was also a very talented man and along with ex-Chair, Gary McLaughlin created the WFS logo, later assigning copyright over the logo to Walking Football Scotland.
In recognition of his contribution, Walking Football Scotland has launched the above award for outstanding contribution to the game locally and among the community.

Prior to last year's AGM several excellent candidates were nominated from across the country and we are delighted to announce the inagural winner of the Arthur Duncan Memorial Award is Carnoustie Panmuir's 𝙈𝘼𝙂𝙎 𝙈𝙐𝙄𝙍
Carnoustie has been running for seven years and throughout that time Mags has built it into the welcoming and thriving community activity it is today. From initial kick-off with around a dozen players, weekly sessions now have up to 24 players, with more than 30 signed up to get the health and mental wellbeing benefits walking football provides for a squad varying in ages up to 80.
Carnoustie Panmuir WF's popularity and success is down to Mags, whose caring nature, incredible enthusiasm and love for “her crew” and the community shines brightly in everything she does for the club.
Mags is also a pillar in other community projects including Carnoustie Memories, but it is with the walking footballers her volunteering excellence really bursts into life, leading by example and ensuring all players, whether regulars or newbies, are made to feel welcome and part of our family.
She has also steered Carnoustie through Covid, into leagues and cups and even into Europe three times to compete at walking football cups and festivals in Portugal.

Mags will be officially presented with the Award at the first League matches of the season at Dundee RPC on Sunday 3rd March.

WALKING FOOTBALL GLASGOW TROPHY 2023

President Kenny McLean was at Hampden Park today carrying out the draw alongside former footballer Gordon Smith and Managing Director of SWPL, Fiona McIntyre, for the annual Glasgow Life, Walking Football Glasgow Trophy which will be played from 29th March - 2nd April 2023.

The draw led by Glasgow Life Football Participation Officer, Matt Ramsay, sees many affiliated Walking Football Scotland clubs whom will be taking part and we wish them and all players the very best in participating in this event in Glasgow.

O40's LADIES PREMIERSHIP

Our Women’s competitive league season kicked off today in Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Wishaw with the 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟰𝟬'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

After 3 wins each, Braehead - Navy and Linlithgow Rose CFC -Whites top the league however, a huge congratulations to all teams and players taking part today for what was a good afternoon of walking football.

Dunfermline Dynamos Visit

Dυɳϝҽɾɱʅιɳҽ Dყɳαɱσʂ

Our Regional Reps, David Callaghan and Jenny Hammond were out visiting one of their clubs today with a visit to see the good work of Dunfermline Dynamos.

The visit gave everyone a chance to ask questions, provide feedback and hear about the latest news and rule changes from WFS.

It was great to see the groups set up and hear how much they have achieved over the last 2 years and long may it continue.
