Player of the Month (October) - Brian Connolly & Isabel McKnight

As October comes to an end, we’re proud to once again shine a spotlight on the people who make Walking Football Scotland’s Players of the Month so special—once again in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

🌟 October Women’s Player of the Month
Isabel McKnight (66) – Cumnock Striders

🌟 October Men’s Player of the Month
Brian Connolly (66) - Carrick WFC

Huge congratulations to Isabel and Brian!

Both shared their reflections on what walking football means to them, highlighting the friendships, health benefits and sense of belonging that keep our community moving forward 💙⚽

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Isabel: “I got involved as my daughters run the local girl’s team here in Cumnock. They myself and friends as the guinea pigs for the ladies walking football and it turns out we all love it!”

Brian: “I had always been active, had recently retired from refereeing and was looking to do something that would help keep me fit. Plus, I was being pestered by my good friend Chris Fleming to come to the newly formed Walking Football club at the local academy and I haven’t stopped since! ”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Isabel: “Walking Football has encouraged me to get fit and healthy. It’s helping with my motivation and encouraging me to socialise even on those cold winter nights. The women that have joined our group are all amazing and encourage each other to take part. I lost my husband a couple of years ago and this has given me the go to get out, get fit and enjoy this wonderful sport.”

Brian: “Physically, it has kept me active and relatively fit, has significantly increased my range of friends from surrounding communities and after years of slumber has given me a reason for occasionally displaying my competitive spirit.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Isabel: “This is more than football for a lot of women - it’s helping us to keep active, enjoy other people’s company and have a real good laugh. So come along, take part and enjoy. There is no pressure at our club so if you want to play you can. Come give it a try!”

Brian: “Nurturing your health and well-being is essential. Walking Football allows you to participate at your level, improving your balance and coordination and gently increasing your general fitness, vital as we age.

Equally important is the time spent having a natter, putting the world to rights at the end of each session, while enjoying a cake and a drink. Bovril never tasted so good!”
