Player of the Month (October) - Anne Bain & William Wilson

We’re keeping up with our monthly spotlight on Walking Football Scotland Players of the Month in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

For October the Walking Football Scotland Women’s Player of the Month is Anne Bain! Anne, 63, plays with Midlothian Ladies.

Walking Football Scotland Men’s Player of the Month is William Wilson! William, 78, plays with Townhead Strollers.

Congratulations Anne and William! They shared their reflections on what walking football means to them.

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Anne: “I got into walking football because I love team sports and played 20 aside with my brothers when I was younger”

William: “I wanted to get back into a sport I enjoyed when I was younger and always kept my football boots handy, as you just never say never.”

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Anne: “Walking football has helped me get much fitter and healthier - I had a health scare 12 years ago (TIA) and I was put on blood pressure tablets ,statins and blood thinners. Since doing regular training I have managed to reduce my dosage and feel much fitter because of walking football.”

William: “Mixing with new people with same interest and enjoying the banter is what it’s all about. Walking Football increases my social interaction, keeps me fit and active. Two years ago my granddaughter aged 6 started playing football and there was I at 76, still playing too at my favourite place, Cumnock.

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Anne: “I would and do encourage others to come along. Everyone is very welcoming and encouraging and the social side after games and training is a plus. We go walks, away for tournaments abroad , celebrate holidays and high days....and most of all we support and encourage each other.”

William: “Come along and give it a go! The companionship and social side with a friendly group is brilliant!”
