Player of the Month (May) - Chris Fleming & Jillian Gemmell

We’re keeping up with our monthly spotlight on Walking Football Scotland Players of the Month in partnership with Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

For May the Walking Football Scotland Women’s Player of the Month is Jillian Gemmell! Jillian, 43, plays with Rossvale.

Walking Football Scotland Men’s Player of the Month is Chris Fleming! Chris, 67, plays with Carrick WFC.

Congratulations Chris and Jillian! They shared their reflections on what walking football means to them.

Why did you get involved in walking football?

Jillian: “My friend Matt who is heavily involved in Walking Football Scotland suggested it to me as I have always loved football but never played for any teams. Having a previous broken ankle means I wouldn’t’ be able to play ‘normal’ football now so this gives me an avenue to enjoy a sport I love watching and playing.”

Chris: “Started walking football after health issue. I had a pituitary tumour removed and needed to get my fitness back as had put on weight due to medication I had been taking and needed to get out house for my fitness and mental health. I have played football all my life at all levels Kilmarnock Brechin and Stranraer and junior and amateur level too.

What positive impact has walking football had on your life?

Jillian: “There’s a great team of girls at Rossvale who look out for each other so it’s nice to be a part of this. It also gives me time away from work and other commitments to enjoy sport. It’s great for your wellbeing and mental health to get out and do something you enjoy.”

Chris: “Great to get back into dressing room environment and playing with guys from 50 to over 80 many having played football some not. I have made many new friends locally and all over Scotland. My wife says it's taken over my life!!! It's great to talk to different guys and realise many have various health issues but come and play and enjoy the social side as much as the actual football.”

What would you say to encourage others to come along?

Jillian: “Give it a try – there’s nothing stopping you even if you’ve never kicked a ball before. Some of my team had never played football before and have progressed so well.

Don’t be fooled by the walking bit – Its’ still hard work”

Chris: “It's more than just the football it's the social side as we at Maybole also have the local community hub for an hour after our games for chat cuppa and cake. I also go and play at other centres throughout Scotland with old teammates that are playing walking football now too.

It's great to see how much enjoyment people get from our sessions especially those who have never played football.
