Historic First as Women’s Walking Football Team of the Year Award is Launched
/Walking Football Scotland is delighted to welcome the launch of the first-ever Walking Football Women’s Team of the Year award, which will be presented as part of the 2026 Scottish Women’s Football Awards on Saturday 28th November at Hampden Park.
This is a fantastic milestone for women’s walking football and another important sign of the continued growth and development of the game across Scotland.
Over recent years, we have seen more women discovering walking football, returning to the game after many years away, or pulling on a football shirt for the very first time.
Behind every team are friendships, coaches, volunteers and communities creating environments where women can be active, feel welcome, enjoy football and experience the physical, mental and social benefits the game can provide.
The new Walking Football Women’s Team of the Year award has been created to recognise exactly that.
Walking Football Scotland CEO Matt Ramsay said: “The ScottishPower SWF Awards is such a big night in the women’s game, which is why I am delighted that we are able to celebrate the success of Walking Football Scotland at the event. Walking Football makes a genuine difference to people’s lives, so it will be great to see those achievements recognised too.”
What are we looking for?
The award recognises a women’s walking football team that has made an outstanding contribution to the growth, development and positive promotion of women’s walking football in Scotland during the year.
The winning team should demonstrate the very best of walking football both on and off the pitch, creating a positive, welcoming and supportive environment for its players while representing the game with pride.
When considering your nomination, think about a team that has:
Demonstrated excellent teamwork, togetherness and a positive team culture.
Created a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment for women of different ages, abilities and footballing backgrounds.
Encouraged new players and women returning to football to get involved.
Grown or sustained participation throughout the year.
Demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and respect towards teammates, opponents, match officials and others involved in the game.
Supported the physical, mental and social wellbeing of its players.
Made a positive contribution to its club and local community.
Helped promote and raise the profile of women’s walking football.
Supported players, coaches and volunteers to develop and enjoy their involvement in the game.
Demonstrated the values and ethos of Walking Football Scotland and Scottish Women’s Football.
Represented women’s walking football positively both on and off the pitch.
Achieved success or demonstrated progress on the pitch during the year.
While competitive achievement can absolutely form part of a nomination, winning trophies is not what will determine this award.
We want to recognise a team whose culture, togetherness, progress and wider contribution make them an outstanding example of what women’s walking football in Scotland is all about.
Who deserves to be recognised?
Perhaps it is a team that has welcomed a host of new players this year.
Maybe it is a group that has helped women rediscover a love of football they thought they had left behind decades ago.
It could be a team that has achieved something special on the pitch, supported a teammate through a difficult period, grown its membership, strengthened its local community or simply created somewhere women cannot wait to return to every week.
